Mezzo-Soprano Makiko Narumi Is Dead at 33

Makiko Narumi, a promising young mezzo-soprano, died in her hometown of Amori-Shi, Japan, on 30 April. She was 33, and had suffered from cancer.
Narumi was a Mahler specialist, having performed the Eighth Symphony with the Cincinnati Symphony under James Conlon and the Second Symphony with the Juilliard Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. She was also a frequent soloist in Bach and Handel oratorios, and sang Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw.
Next October, Naurumi was to have starred in the world premiere of Tan Dun's new opera based on the Book of Tea. She was scheduled to graduate from the Juilliard Opera Center this month.
